The
55th Annual Dinner of the Society of Manchester and
District Golf Captains proved to be a splendid occasion
at the fabulous setting of Mere Golf and Country Club.
Society Captain Robbie Phillips set the tone for the
evening as he and his principal guest were led in to
the packed room by a piper and the food reflected Robbie’s
ethnic past beginning with Scotch Broth and finishing
with a selection of Scottish Cheese.
The
toast to the Society was proposed by David Harrison the
Captain of the R and A who gave an insight into his drive-in
to office at St Andrews a few weeks previously and of
his connections to Cheshire during his long and successful
time in golf.
Robbie Phillips spoke in his own inimitable way in response
to David and was able to thank all of those who had worked
so hard behind the scenes during his most enjoyable year
of office.
Robbie did take the blame for the poor results achieved
by the Society in the matches against other Captains’
societies.
The
toast to the guests was proposed in excellent style by
society President Barry Swainson of Reddish Vale and the
evening was brought to a fitting close by Graham Lewis
of Hazel Grove Golf Club with some great stories and jokes.
Succeeding
Robbie and Barry in the top offices in 2008 will be Colin
Shadbolt of Bramall Park and Jack Bishop of Sale.
