The Northumberland Captains were entertained
over two days at Worsley Golf Club on the Wednesday and
Bolton Old Links Golf Club on the Thursday.
The Northumberland Captains arrived at Worsley in sunny
dry Manchester weather – a far cry from their previous
visit when the Course was flooded.
Worsley Golf Club was a wonderful setting for this occasion
and the course was presented in an excellent condition and
great credit goes to the ground staff for their efforts.
Play began at 1.30 pm and by 6.30 the Manchester Captains
were struggling to keep pace with the visitors and were
trailing 4½ - 2½. Well done Northumberland
Captains.
In spite of this we still entertained the Northumberland
Captains to Dinner at night.
The traditional commemorative plaques were presented to
the Worsley Captain by both teams. Worsley provided an excellent
setting and our sincere thanks go to the Captain, Clive
Davidson and the Council of Worsley Golf Club for hosting
the event.
On Thursday we moved to Bolton Old Links Golf Club. Their
“undulating course” providing a dramatic contrast
to Worsley! Again we were made most welcome. The course
was presented in excellent condition and our thanks go to
the ground staff.
The first four Matches resulted in two wins each - so we
were still trailing by 2. The fifth Match was a win for
Manchester - now trailing by 1, the sixth Match –
another win for Manchester - all square and the tension
is mounting. It is all down to the last Match. At last the
final match comes in – and it is a Manchester win
- 5 - 2 on the day and the overall result 71/2 – 61/2
Manchester regain the Jack Spedding Trophy for the first
time since 2002.
Ian Patterson the Northumberland Captain presented the Jack
Spedding Trophy to the winning Manchester Captain Alan Preston.
The traditional commemorative plaques were presented to
the Bolton Old Links Captain by both teams. Our sincere
thanks go to the Captain, Kevan Porter and the Council of
Bolton Old Links Golf Club for hosting the event.
Another memorable two days and we look forward to meeting
our friends from Northumberland again next year at Westerhope
G.C. and Tynemouth G.C. on the 14th and 15th September 2011
respectively.
