A field of 90, representing 32 Clubs, enjoyed
the Captains Day of the Society Manchester & District
Golf Captains at Chorlton-cum-Hardy Golf Club.
Our thanks go to Chorlton-cum-Hardy G C for hosting this
event for us; the course was set up in magnificent condition
and was a good test of golf.
The weather was hot and sunny with a stiff breeze.
All the players enjoyed the hospitality tent at the 18th
hole where cooling drinks were dispensed by the Captain,
so much so that one member from Saddleworth was so keen
to get his drink that he actually hit his ball into the
tent – see picture!
Making the most of the glorious sunny weather conditions
were winning pair Barry Lucas and Mike Stanfield both from
Swinton Park G C who scored a fine haul of 45 points to
take the top prizes in the Captain’s Day competition.
They are the first winners of the new Bishop-Shadbolt Trophy,
which was very generously donated as the Captain’s
Day Trophy by Jack Bishop of Sale and Colin Shadbolt of
Bramall Park, both Past Captains of the Society.
Runners up on 44 points were Clive Davidson from Worsley
G C and Kevin Cumsty from South Kyme (now Worsley G C.)
Third place on 43 points, after a three card play off went
to Ken Clough from Reddish Vale and Chris Hammond from Cheadle
G C. - narrowly beating the Society President Bill Elliott
and the Chorlton Captain Ian Hales – Ned Spencer and
Gaven Tilbee both from Styal G C were a very creditable
fifth place.
9 2’s were recorded – Ian Hales, Alan Newbold,
Norman Bottomley, Ian Grimsditch, Dick Browne (TWO), Dennis
Babbs, Ron Marquiss, John Blakey – all receiving 4
Society logo balls.
The Captain Alan Preston thanked all the members for attending
and making it a day to remember for him. He presented a
commemorative plaque to the Captain of Chorlton, Ian Hales
who responded by saying how delighted they were to have
hosted the event for Alan.
