The Annual Match for the “Harken Trophy”
against the Bolton & District Society of Golf Captains was
held at Pike Fold Golf Club on Wednesday 20th July 2011. The weather
started off hot and sunny and all matches were completed before
the rain arrived yet again. The course was presented in magnificent
condition and whilst being a stiff test of golf was a pleasure
to play.
The
Past Captain of Pike Fold Golf Club, Mr. John O’Donnell,
welcomed the two Societies to play at Deane Golf Club. He was
delighted that we had chosen Pike Fold as the venue as it proved
that they as a club were progressing in the right direction.
The
Manchester Society Captain David Besant Roberts welcomed the Bolton
Captains and expressed his thanks to his playing partners for
an excellent game. He thanked the officials of Pike Fold Golf
Club for allowing us the use of their facilities and preparing
and presenting the course in an excellent condition. He presented
the usual commemorative plaque to John O’Donnell as a memento
of our visit. A plaque will also be presented to the Ladies Section
of the Club as a thank you for giving up their day to allow us
to play.
John
Powell, Captain of Bolton thanked the Manchester Captains for
their generous hospitality and also reiterated thanks to Pike
Fold Golf Club. He also presented the Club with a memento of their
visit. He then announced that after a very closely fought Match,
Manchester had retained the Harken Trophy. The result being 81/2
to 41/2 in favour of Manchester.
We
look forward to playing against our friends from Bolton again
next year and hopefully we can retain the Harken Trophy!
