A field of 84, representing 24 Clubs, enjoyed
the Captains Day of the Society Manchester & District Golf
Captains at Chorlton-cum-Hardy Golf Club.
Our thanks go to Chorlton-cum-Hardy G C for hosting this event
for us; the course was set up in magnificent condition and was
a good test of golf as evidenced by the scoring.
The weather started off very wet but cleared very quickly and
was then hot and sunny with a stiff breeze. All the players enjoyed
the hospitality tent at the 10th hole where cooling drinks were
dispensed by the Captain.
Making the most of the glorious sunny weather conditions were
winning pair Brian Holt & Ian Wilbur both from Turton G C
who scored a fine haul of 39 points to take the top prizes in
the Captain’s Day competition, winning the Bishop-Shadbolt
Trophy, which was very generously donated last year as the Captain’s
Day Trophy, by Jack Bishop of Sale and Colin Shadbolt of Bramall
Park, both Past Captains of the Society.
Runners up on 38 points after a card play off were John Mould
from Bramall Park G C and Malcolm Hamilton from Reddish Vale G
C.
Third place on 38 points, went to Howard Middleton & Terry
Barnes from Wilmslow G C. - narrowly beating Ian Brooks &
Ged Gaffey
6 2’s were recorded – Ged Gaffey, Ken Whitehead ,Alan
Newbold, Barrie Lucas, John Plunkett, John Mould – all receiving
6 Society logo balls.
The Captain David Besant Roberts thanked all the members for attending
and making it a day to remember for him. He presented a commemorative
plaque to the Captain of Chorlton, Norman Quick who responded
by saying how delighted they were to have hosted the event for
David.
