The Society of Manchester & District Golf
Captains hosted the annual match against The Society of Liverpool
Captains for the Norman Stewart Shield at Ellesmere Golf Club
on Tuesday 12th July.
Despite the forecast of showers the match was played in glorious
sunshine.
A field of 100 enjoyed a wonderful day of golf on an excellent
course that was presented in a superb condition.
After the meal the Captain of Ellesmere Keith Robinson was delighted
to welcome both the Societies to Ellesmere Golf Club. He also
mentioned that he was also delighted to have played with David
Besant Roberts on his return to competitive golf following on
from his recent major operation.
He commended David on his golf but felt that his driving of the
buggy left something to be desired!
David Besant Roberts responded and thanked Ellesmere for their
generous support throughout the day and presented the Captain
with the commemorative plaque.
Peter Blacoe responded for the Liverpool Captains and also thanked
Ellesmere Golf Club for hosting the event. He also presented a
commemorative plaque on behalf of Liverpool. He then announced
the final overall result of the competition which was won by Manchester
14 - 11 making the overall score since 1956 when the Competition
was first played :-
Liverpool 25 wins Manchester 25 wins with 6 matches drawn
He
then presented the Norman Stewart Shield to the victorious Manchester
Captain
Holes in One were recorded by George Pate of Childwall Golf Club
and Jim Walls of Gathurst Golf Club each receiving 6 SMDGC Logo
Golf Balls.
Our thanks go to The Captain and Council of Ellesmere Golf Club
for hosting this annual event and for the way that we were made
to feel welcome throughout the day.
We look forward to renewing old friendships with our Liverpool
colleagues next year at West Derby Golf Club in August 2012.
