Founders Trophy and AGM at Wilmslow Golf Club
8th May 2018

See Gallery below for all imagesWilmslow Golf Club was in fabulous condition as 116 golfers attended our Founders Day Competition 2018. Current holders Fred Finlay and Dave Southern returned the trophy in gleaming condition and had clearly spent their time during the rain soaked winter months keeping it polished.

The early starters teed off in glorious sunshine with Captain Geoff Sable starting proceedings with an excellent drive down the middle of the fairway. Shorts and factor 30 sun cream seemed to be the order of the day however it was those who kept waterproofs and umbrellas in their bags who were to be proved correct.

Despite only a 5% chance of rain being forecast the rain started midway through the afternoon and made golfing conditions very tricky although some good scores were posted and the field was tightly bunched.

Our President David Roberts, partnering Wilmslow President Sue Warburton returned a very respectable 37 points to record his best finish of his year as President.

Captain Geoff Sable partnering Wilmslow Captain Mark Alcroft returned to the clubhouse in confident mood having scored an excellent 41 points. Vice Captain Tony Gregory, looking optimistic that the vote at the AGM would go his way and he would be elected as the next Captain, took what he must have believed to be a strategic masterstroke by partnering Terry Barnes, a Wilmslow member playing off a handicap of 6. It almost worked for Tony however their 40 points was only good enough for joint 6th place.

MDGA Secretary John Campbell clearly had his mind on his ongoing house move as he came in with an uncharacteristic 31 points to finish in joint 51st place whilst vice President Ian Brooks, playing with Tony Draper was clearly saving himself for his year as President and came in with 33 points to secure 41st place.

Star man of the MDGA Executive was Competitions Organiser Ian Hales. Fresh from being pampered and looked after by the Wilmslow GC bar staff and playing with past Ringway GC Captain Mike Prior they battled through the rain to come in with a fine 42 points. Ian also won nearest the Pin with a fine 52 degree lob wedge finishing 26 inches from the hole.

After an excellent meal the presentation took place. Captain Geoff Sable was edged out of 3rd place on a card play off by the ever steady Leigh pair of John Wallis and John Taylor.

Ian Hales and Mike Prior came in a fine second place with their 42 points however it was current holders Fred Finlay (Didsbury) and Dave Southern (Withington) who returned an excellent 43 points to retain the trophy.

An excellent day was had by all and our thanks go out to all the staff at Wilmslow Golf Club for presenting the course in such excellent condition and for the excellent service of Karen and her bar and catering staff
